Walking Trails - Kaslo and Area Day Hikes

Kaslo

1. At the 4 way flashing light in Kaslo turn left and proceed up the hill.
2. Continue through the next 4 way flashing light at Washington St.
3. At Wardner St. turn right and watch for parking area on left.
4. Follow signs for Lookout and Connector Trails
5. Where trail splits do not follow Connector trail - stay on Look Out Trail

1. Cross the wooden bridge into Kaslo
2. Turn left at the first street (C Ave.). Go to end of street and turn left on Railroad Ave. (5th St.).
3. Proceed to parking area and pick up Trail Map.

1. Park by the Moyie and proceed south following the lakeshore.
2. Proceed past Vimy Park and the Skatepark.
3. Continue to follow trail beside the Kaslo River.
4. Turn right at the bridge (Fourth St.) and return to Moyie

1. From the flashing red light in Kaslo proceed approximately 10 kms. South on Hwy 31 toward Nelson.
2. Watch closely for small sign on left for Fletcher Falls Park. Turn left onto Fletcher Frontage Rd. and park in small parking area.
3. The trail follows the waterfall down to the lake and a beach area.
4. For better views of the falls on the way down follow the narrow trail that splits from the main trail part way down. Be careful - there are no protective barriers so watch your footing.

Toward Nelson

1. Follow Hwy. 31 south toward Nelson.
2. At the turnoff for the Kootenay Lake Ferry set odometer to 0 and continue on the highway for approx. 11.5 km (7 miles).
3. Watch for large marina and gas station on left
4. Turn right onto Kokanee Glacier Rd. just past the marina.
5. Continue up the road approximately 11 kms. or 7 miles and watch for pullout for parking and trailhead. Follow signs for Old Growth Trail.
6. For Kokanee and Kaslo Lakes, continue 16 km (10 miles) to the end of the road and the trailhead parking at Gibson Lake. Follow signs. These are longer 1-2 day hikes.

Toward New Denver

1. At the flashing red light in Kaslo turn left onto A Ave.
2. Proceed up the hill to the flashing red light and turn left onto Hwy. 31A.
3. Drive approximately 26 km (16.1 miles) to the abandoned town of Retallack.
4. Turn right onto the dirt road between the old buildings and proceed into the clearing just past the buildings. Turn right and then curve left.
5. Set your odometer to 0 at this point.
6. From the east end of the clearing, proceed .3km (.2 miles) and go right where another road forks left and then immediately go left at the signpost.
7. At 1.6 km (1 mile) bear left and ascend.
8. Stay on main road and reach trailhead parking at 4.5 km (2.8 miles).

1. At the flashing red light in Kaslo turn left onto A Ave.
2. Proceed up the hill to the flashing red light and turn left onto Hwy. 31A.
3. Drive approximately 39 km (24 miles) to Sandon and turn left at the Sandon junction. Park in the pullout on the right.
4. Descend and cross a small creek and follow the signs for the Galena Trail.
5. This trail goes all the way to New Denver so either park a second vehicle at the New Denver Trailhead or plan to hike or hitchhike back. The New Denver Trailhead is on the New Denver Siding Road (marked by a blue and white hiker sign) off Hwy 31A. just before you reach New Denver. Park in the highway maintenance yard.

1. Follow the directions for the Three Forks Trailhead but instead of parking at the junction, follow the Sandon road for 6 km (3.7 miles) into Sandon and park on the left by the Historical Railway Trail interpretive sign.
2. Follow the gravel road that used to be the rail bed for approximately 5 minutes. When you reach a three pronged fork, follow the middle, level, two track road. The rail bed eventually narrows and becomes more overgrown.
3. At 5.7 km (approx. 1 ¼ hours) from the trailhead reach Payne Bluffs junction. Turn left toward Three Forks.
4. The trail descends about 1.7 km (1.1 miles) to reach the Three Forks Trailhead (junction of Hwy. 31 A and Sandon Rd.). From here you can return to Sandon by following Sandon Rd. or continue onto New Denver via the Three Forks trailhead.
